湖南省教育电视台由湖南省教育厅主管主办，接受省委宣传部宣传管理和湖南省新闻出版广电局行业管理的公益性事业单位，为湖南省九大主流媒体之一，“立足大教育，突出青少年，服务全社会”是其办台宗旨，在教育电视行业的突出成就遥遥领先。 湖南教育电视台现拥有常规节目《教视新闻》、《湖湘讲堂》、《国防教育频道》、《湖南招考》、《阅读花园》、《童心协力》等多档自办栏目及《汉语桥世界大学生中文比赛》等大型活动，在湖南本土乃至全国电视节目市场中，均占有重要地位。全台员工总数200余人，占地面积60亩，编辑用房3500平米，演播制作用房1800平米，行政办公用房1500平方米；拥有独立的演播大楼、3个演播厅（80平方米、350平方米、600平方米）、八讯道的转播车、个性化的网站、独立的短信平台。
