湖南都市频道建台于2001年5月，以"都市经典，先进文化"为标竿闪亮登场，迅速表现出惊人的成长性。 湖南都市频道开播伊始，就以其政策性优势得到各市、县包括乡、镇、村电视转播机构的鼎力支持，目前频道节目已经覆盖湖南15个市、州，122个县及所属乡镇村；频道节目以“直播都市，在你身边”为口号，而成为广受湖南电视观众喜爱的首选频道，收视率节节攀升。 湖南都市频道有都市一时间、世界大不同、寻情记等大批王牌栏目，节目力求真实、客观，为普通老百姓提供一个申诉的平台。正因为如此，湖南都市频道在本土享有广大的收视人口。 2002年9月，湖南都市频道与湖南经视、湖南生活频道组建新经视（湖南经济电视的简称）肩负湖南电视二轮改革的重任，全新出发。通过有线和无线有效覆盖了湖南全省十四个市州108个市县，以及江西、湖北等省境内的部分地市，收视人口突破5000万。 在外省，观众可以通过芒果网电视直播频道或芒果客户端观看。
