按照党中央、国家广电总局《关于开办少儿频道的通知》精神，山西省广播电视局积极组建了少儿专业频道——山西少儿频道，于2006年3月1日开播。
山西少儿频道定位为：绿色频道、儿童家园、关注少儿、服务社会。健康、快乐 、关爱、尊重、服务、引导是频道的理念。
山西少儿频道宣传语：这是一个全新的频道，这是一个希望的频道，这是一个未来的频道，这是一个绿色的频道，这是一个我们自己的频道，让我们走进这个充满幻想、充满企盼、充满创造、充满欢乐的频道。0～18岁青少年及其家长、老师等相关人群是频道的主要受众对象。
山西少儿频道是一个新生的专业频道，她将成为一个公益性极强的绿色频道，成为我省关心未成年人思想道德建设的重要媒体和阵地，频道的每一位电视工作者都将以神圣的使命感和责任感，通过少儿频道在德、智、体、美、劳等各个方面给予我省少年儿童全方位的关注、引导，把推动未成年人思想道德教育作为自身义不容辞的职责，为加强和改进未成年人思想道德建设创造良好舆论氛围。
山西少儿频道是山西最具影响力的专业少儿频道,全天节目共播出20个小时。少儿频道主要定位0～18岁少年儿童青少年，及其相关人群。
这里有孩子们最喜欢的动画片--“动画剧场”，全天动画乐翻天。2013少儿频道自办节目全新改版，“宝贝玩吧”、“童星梦工厂”、“积木宝贝向前冲”、“我是小记者”闪亮登场，星期一到五自办节目强势覆盖。《梦想剧场》激情飞扬，洋溢理想光芒，五集连播，屡创收视高峰。大型活动和季播编排热点不断，好戏连台！
