Introduction to Senato TV
Senato della Repubblica (spesso abbreviato semplicemente in Senato), nel sistema politico italiano, è un'assemblea legislativa che – unitamente alla Camera dei deputati – costituisce il Parlamento italiano. I due rami del Parlamento (o Camere) si rapportano secondo un sistema bicamerale perfetto, cioè svolgono in pari grado le stesse funzioni, anche se separatamente.
La Costituzione italiana, a seguito della modifica costituzionale del 1963 che ne ridusse anche la durata a 5 anni, prevede che il Senato della Repubblica sia costituito da 315 senatori eletti, 309 su base regionale e 6 in rappresentanza degli italiani residenti all'estero. È in atto una proposta di legge costituzionale per ridurre il numero dei senatori (vedi ultimo paragrafo). Il mandato elettorale dei senatori coincide con la legislatura e dura pertanto cinque anni, salvo scioglimento anticipato delle Camere da parte del Presidente della Repubblica, sentita l'opinione dei suoi presidenti.
In aggiunta ai 315 senatori eletti, fanno parte del Senato come senatori a vita gli ex presidenti della Repubblica, di diritto e salvo rinuncia, ed inoltre fino a cinque senatori di nomina presidenziale, ossia nominati autonomamente dai presidenti della Repubblica per altissimi meriti.Dal 19 gennaio 2018 i senatori a vita sono sei, uno di diritto e cinque di nomina presidenziale, cosicché il plenum dell'assemblea è pari a 321 membri.
