南阳电视台成立于1985年5月1日。现拥有正式员工333人，其中大专学历以上占到80％，中、高级职称超过三分之一。
南阳电视台现有四个频道，分别为新闻综合频道、经济生活频道、科教法制频道和图文信息频道(CUTV中原联播平台)。主要自办栏目有《南阳新闻联播》、《宛都播报》、《今晚10分》、《聚焦行风》、《问政》、《乡村纪行》、《前沿》、《法治时间》、《天天向上》、《天天健康》、《草庐故事》、《新梨园》等。
南阳电视台拥有豫西南地区最高的发射塔，河南省市级台中最大的1500平方米电视演播厅，“7＋1”讯道数字高清卫星电视转播车1辆、6讯道数字电视转播车1辆、小型电视直播车1辆和卫星数字上行系统。采编播设备采用非线性编辑网络和4通道数字硬盘播出系统，节目信号覆盖南阳及周边地区，可收视人口达1600万人。拥有自己的网站《南都在线》，安装调试了CMMB（手机电视）1KW发射系统，构建了南阳市CMMB单频网，正在筹建地面无线数字电视系统。
作为河南省较早创建的电视台，作为豫西南成长最快的强势电视媒体，南阳电视台创新创优成绩骄人，有近百部作品相继荣获国家和省级大奖。
