延边电视台于1977年12月31日成立，是中国唯一用朝、汉两种语言播出节目的地区级综合电视台2006年8月10日，延边电视卫视频道正式开播，成为中国第一家地区级上星电视媒体，延边卫视通过“中星6A”卫星，不仅覆盖了中国全境，而且在亚洲、欧洲和大洋洲50多个国家和地区都可以收看。
延边州卫星节目落地具体实施分三阶段：第一阶段在完成州内有效覆盖，第二阶段实现对辽宁、黑龙江、内蒙古三省（区）朝鲜族聚居区的覆盖，第三阶段将落地触角延伸到东南部沿海的朝鲜族聚居区及北京、上海等大城市,并在境外实现部分节目落地。
延边卫视是国内第一家地级市上星的电视台，对外宣传延边，让国人了解延边，亲近延边有着独特的现实意义。
