Introduction to 日本映画
日本映画（にほんえいが）は、一般的に日本国内の映画館などで公開されることを前提として、日本国籍を持つ者、あるいは日本の国内法に基づく法人が出資（製作）している映画を指すが、詳細な定義は識者によって異なる。邦画（ほうが）とも呼称される。また、時代によって活動写真、キネマ、シネマ等とも呼ばれる。
トーマス・エジソンによって1891年に発明されたキネトスコープが世界的な映画の起源となるが、それを用いて日本で最初に上映がなされたのは1896年11月で、当時の西洋技術の最先端である映画が到来した年にあたる。日本人による映画撮影としては1898年の浅野四郎による短編映画『化け地蔵』『死人の蘇生』に始まる。ここから現代に至るまで日本映画は日本文化の影響を強く受けつつ、独自の発展を遂げ、日本を代表する大衆娯楽のひとつとして位置付けられていった。
日本映画をジャンルとして明確に定義することは困難であり、「日本人監督によって、日本人の俳優を用いて、日本で撮影し、日本で上映する日本語の映画」という条件のもと、そのいくつかが当てはまるものを一般に日本映画と呼称している。このため、『ホノカアボーイ』などの総海外ロケの映画や、フランスの資本を基に黒澤明や大島渚が撮影した映画、崔洋一、李相日などの在日韓国・朝鮮人監督による映画など、全ての条件を満たしていなくても日本映画と認知されるものもある。
外国映画（洋画）に対する日本の映画という意味での呼称は存在するが、市場のボーダレス化等、製作、配給の両面において多国籍化が一般化している今日において、ジャンルとしての厳密な定義はほぼ無意味なものとなりつつある。
