桂阳广播电视台于1988年建立电视差转台，1992年成立桂阳有线电视台并播出并自办节目《桂阳新闻》。20多年来，广播电视台从无到有，采编队伍从小到大。《桂阳新闻》节目从1996年开始有每周一期改成每天播出，改单播为男女对播。电视台新闻采编制播人员有20年前的13人发展到如今的50余人，采编、制播设备不断更新换代。现有桂阳新闻综合、桂阳经视、桂阳影视3个频道，主要栏目有《桂阳新闻联播》、《蓉城视点》、《经视新闻》等，按照“导向同声，阵地扩容、水平提升”的办台思路，新闻宣传和办台水平大幅提升，成为桂阳领导和广大市民普遍关心关注的地方主流媒体。
2014年1月14日乔迁到新广电中心，打造新媒体，进入新世界。2015年，融合新媒体发展，适应“互联网+”要求，率先在湖南县级台建设网络电视台，同时，恢复播出《桂阳之声》广播电台节目，广播电视覆盖城乡和广大手机端和宽带用户，桂阳电视台在全身市县级电视台率先进入了新媒体时代。
