云南电视台都市频道的前身是云南经济电视台。云南经济电视台成立于1994年，由于成立之初使用的是微波传输，覆盖范围主要是昆明的四区八县，覆盖范围的客观因素决定了该频道的观众定位以服务昆明市民为主。
“都市频道”的定位是一个相当于综合频道的定位，它播出的仍旧包含新闻、电视剧、综艺娱乐、时尚甚至于竞技类等节目，只不过这些节目要具备时尚、现代、节奏快、贴近性强、实用、新鲜等一系列符合都市人欣赏趣味的特点。目前，该频道已经有一档具有强烈都市特色，而且收视率自开播以来一直处于稳步上升态势的自办栏目《都市条形码》。
