岳阳电视台自1986年12月30日正式开播，播出的是第一档自办栏目《岳阳新闻》。随后从最初的一周一次、一周两次发展为一周三次播出。1987年，电视消息《岳阳北门渡口数千名群众遇风受阻，个体户李松林免费送旅客过河》荣获全国电视新闻一等奖，成为岳阳电视台开播以来第一次荣获的国家级新闻大奖。1990年10月20日，岳阳电视台自拍的第一部电视剧《毛泽东和他的乡亲》正式开机，并捧回第10届大众电视“金鹰奖”一等奖。1992年5月，岳阳电视台首次成功直播岳阳国际龙舟节开幕式和闭幕式，一炮打响，轰动省内外。
