1980年，湛江人民广播电台在霞山文明路建起市区第一座电视发射塔，转播中央电视台节目（省电视台第一套节目由大田顶电视转播台直接覆盖）。1983年4月，湛江电视台成立，1984年元旦，开始不定期插播《湛江新闻》。经过一年试播，于1985年春节正式播出，每天播出时间3小时30分，星期天增加2小时30分。
湛江市广播电视台整合资源后，传输范围更广泛，节目更精彩。所办的新闻综合频道（湛江1台）生活都市频道（湛江2台）等深受观众欢迎，收视率较高，是社会各界开拓市场推介产品、树立形象的理想传媒。
